Exxon asks court to invalidate Schneiderman subpoena

ExxonMobil on Monday asked a federal court to invalidate a subpoena issued by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, the latest salvo in the battle between the company and the state’s top law enforcement official.

ExxonMobil is arguing that investigations by New York and Massachusetts in the company are “attempts to further a political agenda for financial gain,” according to a press release issued by the company.

Schneiderman has been looking into whether the company hid its research on climate change, and whether it might be overstating the value of its reserves.

The company’s request came in federal court in Fort Worth, Texas, in a motion to amend a pending action to invalidate a similar civil investigation demand issued by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey.
