Senate Democrats: Don't forget Safety Net hospitals

With worries about potential Medicaid cuts under the Trump Administration, Senate Democrats are urging extra consideration for New York’s ”safety net” hospitals which generally describes institutions that have to serve everyone who walks through their doors regardless of whether they are insured or can pay.

Bronx Democratic Sen. Gustavo Rivera wrote to GOP Majority Leader John Flanagan, noting that Medicaid currently fails to cover all the costs run up by these hospitals and many are operating in the red.

The issue can be fraught because, as Rivera notes, some hospitals have lower Medicaid caseloads but still get safety net funding.

Safety net hospitals are all over the state, from northern New York to New York City and the Capital Region with Albany Medical Center Hospital.

And Albany Med is considered the best hospital around here. There are local hospitals, but when someone is critically injured - or requires complicated surgery - Albany Med is the place to go. Either there or Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.

I know people who had successful bypass surgery at Albany Med, saw one of them last night and he was doing quite well. And when my mother fell five years ago when we had a blackout during Hurricane Irene, she was in surgical intensive care for three weeks in Albany Med. I drove down there every single day, so I got to know the place - and the care she received couldn't have been better - or more compassionate, at least among the staff, since I got to know quite a few of them.
