Upstate NY woman, 59, gives birth to first child: 'It's exciting to have a baby'

NISKAYUNA -- Akosua Budu Amoako, 59, gave birth Thursday to a 7-pound, 4-ounce boy via cesarean section. It is the first child for Budu and her husband, Isaiah Somuah Anim, also 59.

Dr. Khushru Irani delivered the full-term baby at Bellevue Woman's Center in Niskayuna. Mother and child are doing well.

Budu is among the oldest New York residents ever to give birth, but setting a record was not her goal; she wanted to have a child. She and her husband have been married for 38 years and tried unsuccessfully for decades to have a baby.

"It's a good feeling to be a mother," Budu said. "It's a stage in the life of a woman, and it's exciting to have a baby."

if they become band parents and have to work in the concession stands or drive the child around in their mid-70s. My father was 40 and my mother was 39 when they had me and I know it was sometimes rough for them.

Having parents old enough to be grand parents means the kid is going to miss out on some things.

If her parents survive until she is an adult, she will be dealing with elderly parents, just when it's time to strike out on her own, go to college, etc. Most of us don't have to worry about that until at least middle age, plus we often have siblings to share the responsibility.

I'm sure they considered all this though, and perhaps they have a lot of extended family who can help out.

All in all, I am happy for them. How could you not be when you read their story and see their joyful faces?

Not the best idea.

It was difficult for me at 40. But I wanted a child and had lost a baby girl in my 30's. I think the mid-40's should be the definite cut off and the early 30's are the optimal years to have children. Most folks in their 20's are too inexperienced, immature, selfish, and just too plain dumb to have children - I know my parents were.

However, at this late stage in the planet's future, I think it unwise at all now. 😥
But that's for another forum.

I have told her that I plan to adopt in a few years but she keeps reminding me that I can still have biological children in my thirties and forties.
