DEC: Man illegally dumped asbestos in nature preserve

An Orleans County man faces up to four years in prison and a $150,000 fine after being charged by state Department of Environmental Conservation police with dumping asbestos-laden materials in a nature preserve.

According to DEC, Carl J. Rivers, 49, of Albion was arrested Jan. 3 following a seven-month investigation into an illegal dump site on Klossen Road in Alabama, Genesee County.

Rivers has been charged with third-degree endangering public health, safety or the environment, a felony, as well as a violation level charge of unlawfully disposing of solid waste.

Klossen Road runs through the state's Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, a 5,600-acre site used extensively by waterfowl for nesting and as resting and feeding area during spring and fall migrations.
