State lawmakers closing the gap on limousine safety measures

ALBANY — State lawmakers believe they're well positioned to adopt limousine safety standards in January, after failing to get the measures passed during the past legislative session.

The optimism comes after a summer of discussions between legislative staffers from the majorities in both houses of the state Legislature, who are continuing to work out technical and philosophical differences — a sharp contrast from the lack of communication earlier this year.

"We're getting closer and closer to having the bills ready to close," said Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli, a Syracuse-area Democrat and chair of the chamber's transportation committee.

The progress comes as a delegation of federal lawmakers from New York on Thursday announced they had also drafted a series of measures they will ask Congress to enact to improve safety regulations in the limousine industry.
