New York State Fair canceled by pandemic

SYRACUSE — Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday said there would be no New York State Fair this year — marking the first time the event has been canceled since World War II.

“This is a really tough one,” Cuomo said during a COVID-19 update in New York City.

Cuomo, who has been a major booster of the event during his decade in office, noted that fairs all across the nation have been shut down by the coronavirus pandemic. "We have a fantastic State Fair in Syracuse. ... We've had record attendance — 1.3 million people last year. ... We invested money, we redid the whole State Fair. We built a new expo center, 110,000 square feet — it's really amazing."

"This year we're going to have to cancel it and that makes me personally very unhappy, but that is where we are,” he said.
