Hochul, lawmakers vow action in wake of Supreme Court eviction ban ruling

ALBANY — New York’s next governor is ready to work with the Legislature on protecting tenants after the Supreme Court knocked down a key element of the state’s COVID eviction moratorium.

“No New Yorker who has been financially hit or displaced by the pandemic should be forced out of their home,” Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul said after the nation’s top court blocked parts of ban on evictions.

Hochul is to take over as governor Aug. 24 upon the departure of scandal-scarred Gov. Cuomo, who announced his resignation amid sexual harassment allegations.

Hochul vowed to ramp up the state’s problem-plagued COVID rental relief program, which has doled out only 4% of roughly $2.3 billion in federal funds available to it.
