(22,887 posts)An Upper East Side restaurant near our apartment in NYC offers $2.50 oysters during Happy Hour (4:00-7:00 pm). Their bar drinks are around $8.00-$12.00.
On the other hand, a seafood market in town sells fresh oysters for about $10.00-$12.00 per dozen. A bottle of vodka costs about $20.00-$25.00. If one liter contains about 34 ounces, that's about 17 drinks making the drinks "cost" about $1.50.
The puzzle is do we stay home and save money or do we go out for some camaraderie (and exposure to Covid!)?
Actually, it's an easy choice.

(17,275 posts)the LCB (Liquor Control Board) still rules the sales of alcohol with an iron fist. Until recently you could only by wine and liquor at Pennsylvania owned & operated 'State Stores' and beer could be bought at a 'bar' (draft & bottles, plus 6-packs - quantities limited) - cases and kegs had to be bought from 'distributors' but you couldn't buy 6-packs nor drafts there!
Visitors from out-of-state had a hell of a time figuring where to buy what!

I can assure you, this was a not a good situation in terms of the health and welfare of military troops.
