Hochul facing backlash over Buffalo Bills stadium deal, bail changes as N.Y. budget talks continue

ALBANY — Billions in taxpayer funds for the Bills and changes to bail are dividing Democrats as Gov. Hochul negotiates her first budget.

Top lawmakers in both chambers and advocates pushed back on key Hochul budget items Tuesday as talks continued between the governor’s office and legislative leaders ahead of the state’s April 1 fiscal deadline.

Sen. Liz Krueger, chairwoman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, expressed significant reservations about the governor’s plan to pony up at least $850 million in taxpayer dollars to subsidize a new stadium for the Buffalo Bills as she joined advocates for a virtual press briefing.

“I fundamentally believe that transparency in economic development deals should be our first priority,” Krueger (D-Manhattan) said. “These stadium deals keep blowing up in our faces, but we don’t learn from them.”

came from Hochul freezing the bank account of the Seneca Nation to force them to pay casino money to the state. A court has ruled that the Senecas owe the money after a long dispute between them and the state over the terms of the casino agreement. Senecas were holding out on payment pending negotiations for a new casino deal.

When Hochul froze ALL of the Seneca nation's funds, they had no money to cover health care and nutrition needs or to pay employees of the Seneca Nation's governing agencies. So they gave the casino money to the state in order to take care of their citizens. Then Hochul gave the money to the billionaire Pegulas, who own the Bills. The rest comes from taxpayer money.

So, does this mean that the Seneca Nation has an ownership stake in the Buffalo Bills stadium? Asking for a few thousand people in western NY.

I wonder if the votes and support she expects to get from this action will offset the ones that she loses from people who resent state tax money going to billionaires, and those people who support Seneca interests.

I am disappointed in Hochul. She started out well, but is alienating a lot of people. This concerns me because we can't let a Republucan win the NY gubernatorial election.

The candidates who are on the ballot for Lt. Governor, besides James, are far left and favor "defund the police" programs which would sink them in a general election if they win in the primaries.

There are rumors that Cuomo might run again and his poll numbers are only a few points behind Hochul. If she doesn't clean up her act, I might be inclined to vote for Cuomo since he would at least have a chance of winning in the general. I am afraid that Hochul's actions could keep enough Dem voters home to give Republicans a win, depending on who they run.
