(4,674 posts)This whole NY redistricting business is crazy and potentially damaging in terms of loss of power and Congressional votes. My district (West Side of Manhattan) is now being combined with the East Side, thus setting up a competition/battle between two important and powerful Democrats: Jerry Nadler, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee and Carolyn Maloney Chair of the House Oversight Committee.

(136,074 posts)Maloney seems to have decided to 'move-' ish, so he'll be in less difficult district for Dems ('next door?') and run 'against' Jones.

(25,267 posts)In NY a Rep. doesn't have to live in the district he runs in. Maloney could choose to run in the more difficult 17th district and allow the freshman Democrat to run in the easier 18th district.

(25,267 posts)Ohio's map was similarly rejected by the court but Ohio republicans simply resubmitted the same gerrymandered map, NY Democrats had an impartial master redraw its map.
Republicans have regained control of the House through gerrymandering. For Democrats to keep the House we are going to have to flip seats now.

(43,049 posts)also Jamaal Bowman whose district was also screwed up. This is what happens when you lose population and thus House representation. Three guys fighting over two seats. And we don't know until tomorrow who wins this musical chair chorus until the judge and the legislature agree in who's been gerrymandering.
My district was OK, and still is, I guess. The good news is that the useless Republican is now running for Governor, so it looks like we're rid of him. The West End of the Island is having a few problems.
For another horrorshow...

(136,074 posts)apparent 2 point advantage, and not even informing Jones he was making the switch.
I may look @ West End of the Island, just because; I lived in Nassau County, so not relevant for me, I guess.

(43,049 posts)not unusual in this state. If you lived in Nassau, you may remember some of the legendary fights of the past.
I think the biggest problem was the Democrats finally had the muscle to gerrymander things their way and suddenly they had that Special Master saying no.
