QUEENSBURY A man was shot in the hip Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Route 9 Walmart, and police said they were actively looking for the shooter Sunday night.
The Warren County Sheriffs Office, in a news release issued about 6:15 p.m. Sunday, said a male victim suffered a gunshot wound to the hip and was undergoing medical treatment after being transported by ambulance to the hospital. Police were called to the scene at 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
Employees told The Post-Star that they were informed by a store manager at about 4 p.m. that the shooting involved two people in a fight outside the store. The employees said they believed the two people were store patrons and were not employees of the store.
The victim, they said they were told, suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Police, in a later news release, described it as a hip wound.
The incident occurred near the general merchandise entrance on the left side of the store, employees said.
Three employees, waiting to be picked up outside the grocery entrance after the store closed early because of the violence, and a fourth employee exiting from the auto service center, said they were asked by management to go home. The store closed to the public after the shooting incident but reopened Sunday night.
Police said Walmart was evacuated and closed out of an abundance of caution and that no part of the incident occurred inside of the store, it all took place outside in the parking lot.
Warren County Sheriff Jim LaFarr was on the scene Sunday afternoon.
The public is not at risk, LaFarr said while standing in the rain.
No suspect had been arrested as of Sunday evening.
The news release stated that police are involved in an active investigation and are working to identify a suspect and/or a suspect vehicle and will provide updates as information becomes available. ... There is no reason to believe there is a threat or concern to the general public.
The Sheriffs Office is leading the investigation, but state police personnel were assisting at the scene.
Police are asking anyone with information or who may have captured video or photos of the incident to contact the Warren County Sheriffs Office Criminal Investigations Unit at 518-743-2500, option #1.

I heard about this earlier tonight, it's within 5 miles of where I live and I pass it when I go pretty much anywhere, like tonight! This is pretty big news here in the North Country!

(19,312 posts)I was going to say, this must be in your neck of the woods. Now we find out it was too close for comfort.
Glad you weren't in there or passing by when all this went down.
What is it with Walmarts? They're becoming, or have already become, a right-wing shooters' paradise. I go to them as infrequently as possible (not for this reason), but I might have to start quitting them altogether.
Glad you're fine, my friend. Keep us informed of all the sordid right-wing details. I'll have to check the Watertown news too. Take care, and always be aware of your surroundings (something I've warned my daughter about since she was a little girl), because you never know when trouble will arise.
You're too valuable to all of us, my friend.

(222,217 posts)It's right on the main road that passes through the middle of town, lots of traffic and I didn't take a look at their crowded parking lot since there was rain and fog and visibility wasn't the best. Little did I know when I arrived at the meeting I was headed to up north and they were all talking about it - though I had to straighten one of them out that this hadn't happened before recently - that was in Virginia...
But it is scary as hell that this could happen in my neck-of-the-woods. The tourists are gone, the "season" is over, you'd think things would have quieted down by now. And the scuttlebutt was that the fight was between locals, nothing political about it, but frightening nonetheless - especially since the local paper has yet to publish an update.
And yes, it was way too close. Thanks for your concern, my friend. We never imagine that this kind of thing could happen here!

(222,217 posts)QUEENSBURY The Moreau man accused of shooting another man in the parking lot of the Route 9 Walmart pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday.
Adrian A. Simental, 33, made a brief appearance in Queensbury Town Court in which his lawyer entered the plea on his behalf.
Simental did not speak.
His next court appearance will be on Jan. 3.
Simental was arrested on Nov. 29 in connection with the incident that occurred two days prior.
He is accused of firing a handgun at a 52-year-old New York City man, identified in court paperwork as Brendon Grant, following an aggressive driving encounter that occurred moments earlier on Route 9 in the area of the Northway Plaza, which is less than a half-mile south of Walmart.
Police said Simental followed Grant's vehicle into the Walmart parking lot, where a verbal and physical argument took place. Grant was shot in the lower abdomen and was treated at Glens Falls Hospital and Albany Medical Center for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He has since been released.
Simental fled the scene but was located two days later. When police arrived to arrest him, he said that he was expecting that they would find him. Simental told Warren County Sheriff's Investigator Jeffrey Grenier in the car ride to the police station that he works as a laborer and wanted to make sure he had his steel-toed boots.
I'm a general laborer, but mostly now it's going to have to be construction. They are the only ones that take felons, right? Simental said, according to court documents.
He said he is from California.
Im here all by myself. I just started out in New York City, but it didnt work, Simental said.
Simental also asked police how they found his car, which had been impounded earlier. Simental said he had a tracker on it.
He also said he got 2 1/2 days of sound sleep before he was tracked down.
Simental is facing felony charges of attempted first-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
He is being held in Warren County Jail for lack of $200,000 cash bail or $600,000 bail bond.
