About 30 members of the far-right group assembled on Broadway Saturday afternoon in an impromptu demonstrationSARATOGA SPRINGS A group of apparent members of the far-right Proud Boys extremist group gathered briefly on Broadway Saturday afternoon. Witness also saw members of the group in Ballston Spa and Waterford later in the day.
Video posted to Facebook showed about 30 masked members of the group wearing black and yellow clothing bearing the group's name standing at a measure of attention while the "Star Spangled Banner" played off-screen.
Another video showed the group standing in an intersection holding American and anti-Biden flags aloft as Jason Aldean's "Try That in a Small Town" played behind them.
There was no visible police presence at the gathering. Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner James Montagnino said that his office had not received any notice that the group was planning to assemble. "We didnt have any prior notice," Montagnino said. "The whole thing was done in a matter of minutes. We have regular patrols and there was nothing that called out for intervention."
A yellow Dodge pickup truck with a sign saying "Law and Order" above the cab and American flags in the bed was illegally double parked on Broadway during the demonstration.
The group appeared peaceful and largely non-disruptive, according to photos and video reviewed by the Times Union.
The Anti-Defamation League describes the Proud Boys as: " a right-wing extremist group with a violent agenda. They are primarily misogynistic, Islamophobic, transphobic and anti-immigration. Some members espouse white supremacist and anti-Semitic ideologies and/or engage with white supremacist groups."
Members of the group nationally took part in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, with four leaders of the group being convicted of seditious conspiracy charges earlier this year.
Saturday was one of the biggest days in the Saratoga summer calendar, with the Whitney Stakes drawing thousands to the city and race track.
"There didn't seem to be any need for any major calling up of additional personnel," Montagnino said.
Saratoga Black Lives Matter leader Lexis Figuereo blasted Montagnino's response to the gathering, citing the heavy police response that his group has received when it has demonstrated on Broadway.
He also questioned why the duration of the gathering should have had any bearing on an official response from the city. "It was okay because it was short and that's why he felt no need to do something about it?," Figuereo said.
Figuereo said he believed the men who gathered on Broadway had come from out of town. "This is a white supremacist gang and hate group," he said.
Montagnino said he had not been in touch with Mayor Ron Kim about the impromptu gathering; a message for Kim left by the Times Union was not immediately returned Sunday.

(222,072 posts)Now we're part of District 21. We were initially represented by Bill Owens, a moderate Democrat from up north. But then he retired in 2015 and I liked his chosen successor, Aaron Woolf, made GOTV calls for him - but that's when Stefanik won for the first time and we've been stuck with her ever since. However, when we got redistricted again she no longer lives in the district. She said she'd move if she won in November, but we're still waiting.
After her performance at the impeachment hearings alongside Gym Jordan, billboards went up throughout the district. This was the one I used to pass on my way home:

(22,850 posts)I feel your pain.
I live in the eminently forgettable Doug Lamborn's district here in beautiful Colorado Springs.
Lamborn - whom I like to call Dumb-born - is the quintessential backbencher: never a bill, never a word, never an idea - and hardly ever a town hall (hobnobbing with DC lobbyists is more fun, I suppose).
He basically just keeps the seat warm, and votes aye every time McCarthy needs him to. Most locals don't even know he's their congresspod-person.
He did once make the news, at the depths of the pandemic, for allegedly threatening office staffers who wore masks with their jobs if they continued to do so.
Some reportedly came down with Covid, and passed it on to family members - with a possible death or two (though I'm not sure).
But he's gerrymandered for life. A common tale, as you know.

(222,072 posts)Protesters showed up at her headquarters from her first day in office - and she refused to publicize her schedule ahead of time because she knew protesters would show up. Before the last election, she held a rare "telephone" town hall - and we heard that she blocked those who didn't agree with her or had uncomfortable questions. So much for representing the views of constituents!

(22,850 posts)Thanks for sharing those keen insights into Ms. Stuffanik.
Here's hoping for a change for the good people of NY-21. Can't claim to be too familiar with the district - but we did once drive through it with my folks as a kid. Beautiful, amazingly woodsy country; serene too.

(576 posts)I live nearby and visit often for the shops, garden tour, Yaddo, and Caffe Lena. Times are a changin' in good old Saratoga and they are having a difficult time dealing with it. The wealthy, white crowd can no longer live in their little bubble. All kinds of fights at city council meetings as to how to handle the homeless, panhandlers, guns and fights at bars, having BLM members arrested.

Anecdotally, a friend and I were walking around town on a Tuesday around 11 a.m. during the week of ChowderFest. A man passed us, yelling, ranting, and threatening. A bunch of us cleared the sidewalk. The young man was obviously unwell. When I was at the traffic light at the Route 29 intersection where Stewarts is on the left, I saw a shirtless man wrapped in a sleeping bag standing in front of Stewarts doors.
My friend's sister owns an expensive Italian restaurant in Saratoga. She keeps complaining that old trope "no one wants to work". I asked where someone is supposed to live in or near Saratoga to work a part time job for minimum wage. Most of the former apartments/rental properties are now AirBnBs because the homeowners can make more money that way, especially during track season.

(576 posts)I've heard the same info. about the housing. Also, in Guilderland, CDTA wanted to add a bus stop. People need reliable transportation to get to work. But, of course, the residents cried NIMBY (not in my backyard). Serious conversations needed everywhere.

(222,072 posts)Glens Falls and Lake George have bus service and a lot of locals rely on it - as do the tourists.

(576 posts)I did not have a car while attending UAlbany. I lived downtown and besides college, worked two jobs in Colonie Center. CDTA was a lifesaver.
Again, the same people who keep repeating their mantra "no one wants to work" will also not tackle housing and transportation. It's easier to blame the poor and struggling than to solve the problem.

(222,072 posts)And my mother didn't drive until we moved to the rural north end of Lake George (on the side of a mountain!) when she had no choice but to learn. Plus, they only had the one car which my Dad took to work. So when I was little, we also took buses - I still remember exactly where the bus stop was, right across the main road from where we lived.

(576 posts)We grew up camping/boating on Sacandaga Lake until my parents finally bought a camp there. They finally built a house on the property. So far, the little towns on Sacandaga: Northville, Mayfield, Broadalbin, etc., remain fairly quiet and not as commercialized as the main drag in Lake George.

(22,038 posts)About 20 years ago. The main city now has a lot of money about as the town is vastly revitized, but the surrounding area is poor racist and GOP. Saratoga has always been Republicansl area money or no money.
