North Carolina Republican lawmakers who are concerned about what students are being taught in class could require schools to post online what materials their teachers are using.
The state House passed the Academic Transparency bill on Wednesday. It would require school districts and charter schools with 400 or more students to list online what instructional materials they used in the past school year.
Some GOP lawmakers say they feel the legislation is necessary because parents are concerned about what their children are learning.
This will help the parents going to the next grade be able to look and see what that teacher taught the year before, and hopefully were just going to teach the kids, Rep. Jeff McNeely, an Iredell County Republican, said at Tuesdays House Education Committee meeting.

Do the legislators intend to raise the salaries of teachers? Posting lesson plans and the materials used will require the teachers to spend additional time each day. Using conservative estimates of the amount of time spent for at least 20 days a month adds up to around $200 per month.

(25,483 posts)I wish it did. Someone needs to remove the veil from that racket. Too often the students are unsupervised and teaching themselves. That needs sunlight.

(2,226 posts)I seldom have more than 4-5 parents show up in my highschool classroom.....they are so interested in what we do......NOT. For the past year of remote learning the parents have had access to our Canvas platfom as do their kids. I haven't seen a parent yet and the one parent I had a conference with as did a couple of other teachers went downhill fast....all our fault of course. Johnny is not doing well in your class.....no he's not. He never turns in his assignments or takes my online tests. Well the computer screen gives him migraines.....ok, but they are not serious enough migraines to keep him from coming to school after the school day to play basketball with the JV team....Well he has migraines and other issues......blah, blah blah, Mrs XYZ, here's what I will do. I will print out two weeks worth of missing assignments and I will give you one of my very few old history textbooks, he can use the book and PLEASE return the book at the end of the semester........She did pick up the book and assignments the next day along with the Math teachers work but I haven't and most likely will never see that textbook again.....Yes posting my lesson plans and resource material is really going to go over well....With all my free time and stuff. And they wonder why so many teachers quit.
