Democrat Josh Remillard announced Monday that he will run in North Carolinas 13th Congressional district against U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn.
Cawthorn currently represents District 11, which includes his home county of Henderson, but recently said he would run in District 13 in 2022. Representatives do not have to live in their district.
Henderson County will be apart of the new 14th District beginning in 2022, after congressional maps were approved Nov. 4 by the General Assembly. Counties in the 13th District are Polk, Rutherford, McDowell, Burke, Cleveland, Gaston and part of Mecklenburg.
My grandma always told me not to start any fights, but that if I did get into one, Id damned well better finish it," Remillard said in a news release. "Madison Cawthorn started this fight, and I'm going to finish it.
"When Madison Cawthorn got on that stage on January 6th and sent that pack of rioters to attack our country, I knew it was my mission to defeat him."
Remillard, a U.S. Army combat veteran, went on to call Cawthorn "a traitor, a fraud and a coward," and a "disgrace to the country" that he fought for and his friends died for.
"I got into this race to hold Madison Cawthorn accountable, and thats exactly what Ill do," Remillard said.
