Thousands across Carolinas without power as winter storm slams Southeast

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Thousands of people across both North and South Carolina were without power Sunday as a winter storm slammed the U.S. Southeast.

Ahead of the winter storm, Duke Energy officials on Saturday estimated more than 700,000 customers could lose power over the duration of the storm.

Duke reported more than 110,000 customers were without power across the Carolinas, with 71,000 in North Carolina and 39,000 in South Carolina. By 6 p.m. Sunday, officials had gotten the total outages down to 82,500.

Of North Carolina's 100 counties, 25 have declared a State of Emergency.
