Early voting in NC began last week, on October 20. I thought it might be interesting to compare the Early Voting numbers with 2018, the last midterm election. A day-to-day comparison wouldn't tell us much, since the days are different due to how Election Day changes, and there are usually fewer votes on weekends. So I thought a total-vote comparison and an average-votes-per-day comparison would be better:
In 2018, after 6 days of Early Voting, 563,242 votes had been cast.
In 2022, after 6 days of Early Voting, 597,982 votes have been cast. Therefore, this year we have had 34,740 more votes cast after 6 days of Early Voting.
In 2018, the average number of votes per day after 6 days of EV was 93,874.
In 2022, the average number of voters per day after 6 days of EV is 99,664, a difference of 5,790 votes per day.
Things look good so far with Early Voting. However, the biggest change is in mail-in ballots that have been received. In 2018 (in the Before Times), at this point there had been 25,620 ballots received by mail. This year, the total so far is 68,330. That's a difference of 42,710.

(3,848 posts)For me, the state with the most impressive stat is PA where Dems have cast 73% of early votes compared to 19% for the GOP.

(16,259 posts)2018 was in the Before Times, when vote-by-mail was still under the radar for most people in NC. We have had early voting for years, but relatively few people took advantage of vote-by-mail until 2020.
Funny - for 10 years Republicans passed laws in NC to make voting by mail easier, and advertising it to one of their core groups - senior citizens. Then suddenly in 2020 voting by mail became filled with fraud, because Democrats were using it more than Republicans.

(4,580 posts)There are far more women then men voting absentee. I am not sure if that is because of Roe, or if its because women live longer than men. No idea how gender of voters is comparing to 2018.

(3,284 posts)This year so far, there have been about 45,000 more women than men who have already voted in NC.
At this same time in 2018, there were about 42,000 more women than men who had already voted.

(3,742 posts)I was a poll observer on Saturday, October 22, it was steady, not mobbed, but pretty much a steady stream of voters during the 4 hours I was there. Your reporting is very encouraging.

There've been some very nasty anti-Beasley ads unfortunately.

(1,996 posts)Please do keep us posted.
I haven't yet voted, need to review the school board candidates to see if there are any I care to vote for. We're told we can pick 3, but there was only one I thought I'd like to see elected. Will vote tomorrow or Friday.
Thanks.

(2,612 posts)Jon Ralston in NV is an old hand at doing the same sorts of comparisons as you are. A fellow number cruncher. He usually explains why.

(6,321 posts)The population in NC is growing relatively fast, so is the number of registered voters. Over 300,000 more registered voters in 2022 than in 2018. There are currently just over 7.4 million voters registered in NC. Growth about 1% a year!
