Besides continuous Democratic strength in urban and some rural counties, state-wide NC Supreme Court and overall NC General Assembly results are concerning. If these #s are applied to 2024, then GOP will have full state-wide control. Am I wrong?

(1,998 posts)I had the same thoughts. Beasely loss was disappointing but imo losing 2 state supreme court seats is devastating. In the past NC has often split races, or they've been closer. At least we did elect a Dem to our new 14th congressional seat.
The fact that we lost the Senate by 3 points and also lost the state supreme court does not bode well for us moving forward.
Gerrymandering, abortion and voting rights, all in the hands of a red state supreme court.
And I wonder about our governor in 24, Cooper won't be running due to term limits.
I ask myself, will they elect another Dem in order to appear bipartisan? Or will they embrace their racist selves and just turn NC red?
A lot of us in NC are grumpy and disappointed and discouraged about our results.

(3,286 posts)Republicans have controlled the NC General Assembly since 2011 and have gerrymandered themselves quite a majority, even though this state is basically 50-50. They also changed judicial races from non-partisan to partisan, so that those running for judgeships have party affiliation by their names.
I dont know what the NC Dem party has been doing lately. They used to totally ignore rural areas, figuring that our strength was in urban areas. Yesterday, though, the turnout in some urban areas was horrible. We need to get our act together, and fast!

I think we're one seat away from a red legislative supermajority - which is obviously also a risk
