A girl who was part of a dance troupe taking part in the Raleigh Christmas Parade died Saturday when she was hit by a pickup truck towing one of the troupes floats. ... The parade was canceled immediately after the incident. ... Two sources initially confirmed the girls death to the N&O. The Raleigh Police Department later released a statement announcing the girl had died. No one else was injured.
The RPD said the driver of the truck, 20-year-old Landen Christopher Glass, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, improper equipment, unsafe movement and carrying a firearm in a parade. ... The girl, who has not been identified, was a member of CC & Company Dance Complex, a widely respected dance school on Six Forks Road in Raleigh.
The truck, a GMC Denali, was pulling one of two CC & Company floats when it went out of control, according to ABC11, The News & Observers newsgathering partner. ABC11 said the driver was honking his horn and yelling for people to get out of the way.

A truck pulling a float at the Raleigh Christmas Parade lost control and hit a parade participant, Raleigh Police said. ... The girl, hit near the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Boylan Avenue, was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries. ... Police are investigating. The driver of the vehicle, Landen Christopher Glass, is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless, improper equipment, unsafe movement and carrying a firearm in a parade.

(92,009 posts)It sounds like the brakes failed and the driver was trying to alert people in the way which was difficult in a parade where honking and all that is going on. From the video I saw, looks like the driver is devastated about it.

(14,495 posts)he tried using his emergency brake? When I was about his age my brakes failed coming up to a stop light that was about to turn red and I used my emergency brake to stop my car. May not have helped though in this situation I suppose.

(6,178 posts)I was on 401S. Hauling along and came up to a school bus on a downward slope just past Ten-Ten Rd. I stepped on my brakes, and they were almost nothing. I did the only thing I could do to stop the vehicle from hitting the stopped school bus. I slammed the shift into Park. I had to have the tranny rebuilt. Still WAY cheaper than hitting a stopped school bus.
