Siemens Mobility announced yesterday it will invest $220 million to build a manufacturing and rail services facility in Lexington, North Carolina.

The plant will produce passenger coach cars to meet rising demand for passenger-rail service in North America. The company also will build on the 200-acre site a first-of-its-kind facility to overhaul locomotive and passenger cars.

“For more than 30 years, we’ve seen the U.S. market continue to grow as we have manufactured over 3,000 locomotives, passenger coaches and light-rail vehicles in the U.S.A. in partnership with our 2,000 American suppliers, including more than 40 in North Carolina. We now look forward to expanding in North Carolina and on the East Coast, and to continuing to deliver sustainable rail," said Siemens Mobility CEO Michael Peter in a press release.

It's anticipated the plant will begin operations in 2024 and incorporate some of Siemens’ technology — such as robotic welding, 3D printing and virtual reality welder training — currently used at the Siemens Mobility plant in Sacramento, California. The North Carolina plant will be carbon neutral, company officials said.
