NC-HD106: Veteran Democrat Carla Cunningham suffers huge loss in Charlotte primary

The Rev. Dr. Rodney Sadler bested incumbent Rep. Carla Cunningham in a Mecklenburg County primary to win the Democratic nomination in heavily-Democratic District 106. Sadler won with 70% to Cunningham’s 22% in unofficial results.

No Republicans signed up to run in House District 106, so Sadler will most likely win the seat in November by default.

Cunningham has for years crossed the aisle to help Republicans achieve parts of their agenda.

Democrats’ frustration with the seven-term House member boiled over last year when she made a controversial speech about immigrants before casting a crucial vote overriding Gov. Josh Stein’s veto of an immigration bill. Cunningham said of immigrants, “All cultures are not equal,” leading some to accuse her of racism.
