by misleading residents about their registration status. I'm posting this here because they'll probably try it in NC too. Be on the lookout!

The West Virginia secretary of state is calling an Americans for Prosperity mailing about voter registration "misleading" and "confusing."
The mailer says the recipient only has a few days to register to vote at his or her current address. It includes a voter registration card and prepaid envelope.
Democratic Secretary of State Natalie Tennant said people have to update their registration only if they move, change their name, or want to switch political parties. Tennant said legitimate contact will only come from county election clerks, not third-party groups.
If you have not moved, changed your name, or switched political parties, then you should throw this mailer into the trash because your voter registration is still valid, Tennant said in a news release. We were made aware of this situation because there was a large number of confused citizens calling our office and the offices of county clerks asking questions about why they had to update their voter registration information. The secretary of states office did not send this mailer, and it did not come from county clerks. We dont know what the purpose of the mailer is but we do know that it is confusing citizens.

(27,362 posts)It sounds like a voter registration drive. They just aren't as good at it as we are.
Were you thinking that they were targeting them to already-registered Democrats on the theory that some of us might assume we can't vote if we don't get them back in time... so we just won't show up in November?
Since the cited deadline was for voting in the primary, their target audience was likely to be potential republican primary voters.

(14,971 posts)suppress the vote. It seems they mainly ended up confusing people. I'm very paranoid about election fraud.

(27,362 posts)I have no doubt that they'll do what they can to supress Democratic turnout in NC (they were likely part of the move to adjust early voting hours)...
... it just doesn't appear to fit in this case. GOTV efforts on the other side (even when financed by the Kochs) are reasonable. It's just embarrasing for them if they spent money to target unregistered voters (of course... hoping to hit those that are more likely to be Republicans)... and ended up wasting money and confusing many who were already registered.
