Another national black eye for NC, courtesty of Duke's Prof. Hough.

This, I readily acknowledge, may be a little of my UConn showing (we really don't like Duke) ... but as a progressive living in NC I'm a little sensitive to how the state I live in looks nationally and, for better or worse, Duke is one of those institutions everyone thinks of when they think of NC, so Prof. Hough's recent comments on a New York Times editiorial about Baltimore interested me more than they would have had they been from a representative of a university in another state.

His comments were along the lines of 'blacks are lazy victims, not like those industrious Asians!' Disgusting and ignorant of history, to be sure, but also, I think, not an uncommon set of prejudices. It's important I think, that these sorts of stereotypes be addressed head-on and dealt with, so anyone who might be inclined to agree with Hough's assessment understand not only that he's wrong, but why he's wrong.

WRAL has an article about his comments, with key quote, here.

My post about his comments is here.
