Haywood elections official resigns after Facebook posts prompted move to oust her
A member of the Haywood County Board of Elections who contended on social media that Democrats plan to legalize pedophilia has resigned her post under pressure.
Republican Cornelia Cree stepped down Oct. 16, the day before the State Board of Elections was scheduled to consider whether to remove her from office for Facebook posts attacking Democrats and urging people to vote Republican.
State law says no election board member may make public statements "supporting or opposing the passage of one or more clearly identified candidates for public office."
Details in state documents
According to state board documents, Cree posted on her Facebook page Sept. 18 that the coming election "is urgent because the Democrats have the following plans: Legalization of pedophilia."
