North Dakota lawmakers push to add names of fallen sailors to Vietnam Veterans Memorial

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — North Dakota lawmakers are urging Congress to add the names of 74 U.S. sailors who died in a 1969 naval accident to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

A resolution making its way through the state legislature calls for federal recognition of the crew members of the U.S.S. Frank E. Evans, who were killed when their ship collided with an Australian aircraft carrier during a training exercise in the South China Sea.

The accident occurred on June 3, 1969, when the Evans was struck by the HMAS Melbourne, cutting the U.S. destroyer in two. Among those killed were Patrick Gene Glennon of Fessenden, North Dakota, and Robert James Seale of Grand Forks.
