Refinery opponents call for more thorough state review

DICKINSON — Several who attended a public hearing Wednesday on a refinery proposed near Theodore Roosevelt National Park said North Dakota’s process for evaluating such projects is flawed and called for a more comprehensive review.

The North Dakota Department of Health took public comment Wednesday on the proposed Davis Refinery, but many concerns fell outside the scope of the air quality permit the agency is reviewing.

For example, concerns about impacts of light and noise from the facility on the national park 3 miles away will not factor into any state agency’s review of the project.

Similarly, the jobs and other economic benefits of Meridian Energy Group’s proposal will not be considered by regulators.
