North Dakota continues to pursue legal action for DAPL protest costs

BISMARCK—The North Dakota Attorney General's Office continues to pursue potential legal action against the federal government to recoup costs associated with the Dakota Access Pipeline protests.

The state is preparing to file a claim under the Federal Tort Claims Act, which needs to include an itemized list of expenses such as equipment and law enforcement overtime, according to Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem.

Stenehjem's office has spent about $110,000 so far preparing legal action to seek protest expenses, according to Stenehjem and a report submitted to the Legislature's Budget Section this week.

"We've spent a lot of time on this and are getting ready to proceed," Stenehjem said.
