Follow-up: Mercy blasts UAW for lacking 'unity' following failed contract vote
TOLEDO -- A day after St. Vincent Medical Center nurses rejected a contract offer from Mercy Health, a hospital spokesman released a statement saying Mercy is aware of a petition from union members to decertify their UAW representation.
Mercy officials also said in the statement that nearly 200 nurses have resigned from the union. A Mercy representative did not return a phone call seeking to clarify details about the stated petition, resignations, and where Mercy obtained that information.
We believe this vote was not a referendum on the contract terms, as the union tentatively agreed to the contract and recommended ratification, nor was it an indication that Mercy Health did not put forth good faith efforts to meet the demands of a majority of the bargaining unit members, Mercy officials said in the statement.
Brian Rothenberg, UAW spokesman, said the tentative agreement was supported by the local bargaining committee and the international executive board but that the UAW is a democratic union and the members ultimately made the decision to reject the contract.
