DeWine administration defends streamlining feds' access to millions of Ohio driver's license photos
He not only defends it, but as AG he streamlined it!
COLUMBUS, OhioGov. Mike DeWines spokesman on Wednesday defended the access that federal authorities have been given to the states facial-recognition database, which includes millions of Ohioans drivers license photos.
However, DeWine spokesman Dan Tierney said the governor supports Attorney General Dave Yosts order to review whether the facial-recognition database, part of the Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway (OHLEG) network overseen by the AGs office, was used for forbidden purposes -- such as sweeping surveillance dragnets of Ohioans.
For years, Ohio and a number of other states around the nation have offered access to drivers license photos to the FBI and other federal agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Washington Post first reported the story Sunday.
In 2016, while DeWine was attorney general, state officials signed a memorandum with the FBI to streamline access to the database, which includes millions of drivers license photos -- most of which are of residents who have been convicted of no crime -- sent by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles around 2011.
