COLUMBUS, Ohio Police say a 6-year-old boy brought a loaded handgun to his charter elementary school Wednesday after taking it from his grandfathers home.
A news release from the Columbus Police Department says staff at Kids Care School were made aware of the weapon by another student. The 6-year-old had the handgun in his backpack, police say.
School staff safely retrieved the gun without incident. The student was placed in protective custody.
According to police, the handgun had been reported stolen by the students grandfather on Tuesday. No charges are expected to be filed against the student, but information is being referred to childrens services, police say.
I think its very obvious this could have been the worst day this school could have ever experienced," Det. David Bucy tells WBNS Channel 10. Certainly, if youre a firearm owner we expect that the firearm is secured within your house or in your person at all times. Keeping firearms away from juveniles is a must, not a request.

If this were a requirement, very few people would opt to carry anything other than a single or double-shot derringer. It does give me an idea for a concealed carry law though.
