I think the Goodyear lab where they develop & make racing tires is still active there.

being a kid in the 1960's, and our social studies teacher called Akron "The Rubber Capital of the World". Of course, that elicited snickers from some of us guys...

I know a guy who worked most of his career there, perfecting the chemical formulas for the tires, & I believe every tire used in NASCAR & NHRA racing is developed & manufactured there.
