Federal jury acquits Moreland Hills doctors of more than 40 charges of medical fraud
CLEVELAND, Ohio A federal jury in Cleveland on Wednesday acquitted a pair of Moreland Hills cardiologists of 47 charges of medical fraud following a three-month trial.
The jury deliberated nearly two weeks in U.S. District Court before deciding the case of Dr. Ashis Rakhit and his wife, Dr. Jayati Gupta Rakhit. The jury was deadlocked on 38 other charges without reaching a verdict, attorneys said.
Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to the U.S. Attorneys office in Cleveland for comment on whether prosecutors will attempt to seek another trial on the charges the jury could not agree on. A spokesman did not return messages.
The case, before Judge Pamela Barker, focused on whether the Rakhits performed unnecessary medical tests and procedures to get payouts from insurance companies.
