Children, senior services, library, more will be on Lucas County ballot

Lucas County residents could see a packed ballot come November, with levies for children and senior citizen services, the port authority, and the library.

Wednesday was the deadline for local issues to be filed with the Lucas County Board of Elections. According to its charter, the city of Toledo has until Sept. 6, or 60 days, before the election to file its issues with the board.

Countywide, Lucas County Children Services will be asking voters to approve a 1.5-mill levy that would generate over $13 million a year for five years. It would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $52.50 annually, starting in 2025. The money would go toward the operations of LCCS. The agency already has one levy in effect, a 1.8-mill levy that expires in 2025. Randy Muth, the director for LCCS, said the agency plans to renew that levy as well, once it expires.

Mr. Muth said the increase in taxes is because of recently passed federal legislation that requires the private providers that LCCS contracts with to increase their costs. Mr. Muth said the agency can’t keep up.
