New law allows taxpayers to donate refund to state's coffers

For those Oklahomans who feel the state doesn't impose enough taxes, a law goes into effect Sunday that will allow them to help remedy the situation.

Senate Bill 1085, authored by Sen. Nathan Dahm and signed by Gov. Mary Fallin, will create a checkoff box to allow individuals to donate all or a portion of their state income tax refund or make a direct donation to the state general revenue fund. It takes effect for the 2017 tax year.

Dahm said some people object to previous legislation to cut the income tax rate and say they would be willing to pay more.

"It'll be interesting to see how much money is actually donated," he said.
