#5 Oklahoma: 15.1 Strikes Per Square Mile
•1,054,602 strikes per year with an average of 15.1 per square mile.
•Oklahoma has made it through the last three years (2009-2011) with no reported lightning fatalities.
•From 1959 to 2010, the Sooner State has seen 99 fatalities, which is the 17th most in the nation.
•Meteorological factors: Frontal systems during the spring, fall and winter can produce thunderstorms at times. Thunderstorm complexes can also sweep through the state, providing a large number of lightning strikes.
