Bacone College budget still balanced despite enrollment a third below expectations

Muskogee -- Bacone College’s enrollment numbers for fall semester are one-third below initial hopes, but school officials say that hasn’t kept them from scratching together a balanced budget.

Jan Peppler, vice president of development, said the final tally is 273 students after the add/drop period for classes expired. That figure is 127 students shy of the original budget developed by the school’s administration anticipating an enrollment of 400.

Peppler said the school in Muskogee listened to students for a couple of weeks, trying to best address their needs while necessarily combining some courses.

“We’ve changed our budget; so we are balanced,” Peppler said. “We do feel like we have a balanced budget for this year. Definitely we had to tighten the belt a little more.”

Bacone College had a NCAA Division II football team. For those that are unfamiliar, it means that the school granted athletic scholarships.
