Oklahoma County clerk candidates trade barbs over endorsement, drunken driving record
A Republican challenger for Oklahoma County clerk said Thursday he recalled little about an incident that led to charges against him including driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
David B. Hooten said inclusion of a court document dating from 2001 in a campaign mailing by longtime Clerk Carolynn Caudill amounted to a "new low" in what he characterized as a smear campaign.
Caudill, who is seeking a sixth term, is battling Hooten for the Republican nomination for clerk in Tuesday's runoff primary. The winner faces Libertarian Chris Powell in the Nov. 8 general election.
Caudill said she brought up Hooten's past because her opponents are using her own drunken driving arrest, including her mug shot, against her.
