Hello Oregonians!
My wife and I are looking to relocate to Portland sometime in the spring and I was hoping that some of you might be able to help me out with some general political information. I like to keep up with local and state politics as well as the national scene and I was wondering if anyone had some good recommendations for blogs, news sources or other media that could inform me of issues on the local scene as well as what the local perspective is on the federal side. I have been reading Oregonlive, Willamette Week as well as a couple other sources but wouldn't mind more. Anything you might suggest would be appreciated and information on the liberal/progressive groups in the area would be a plus.
Thanks in advance!

(21,653 posts)They are hard to find here.
Nevertheless, here are some local news links and blogs I regularly frequent that are relevant to Portland:
http://www.blueoregon.com/
http://www.bojack.org/ (libertarian-leaning but informative)
http://vintageportland.wordpress.com/ (my favorite historical Portland blog)
http://www.portlandmercury.com/ (another alt-weekly paper)
http://www.620kpoj.com/main.html (we actually have a progressive talk radio station and you can stream it or get it on iheartradio.com)
http://opb.org/ (Oregon Public Broadcasting, great local and NPR stuff)
If you come, let me know so we can share a microbrew or just bullshit.
Welcome to Oregon.

(600 posts)I have to admit it I am very pleased with the amount of options on local history and community which is sorely lacking where I am now (Central Florida).
As far as the job front is concerned my wife is lining things up hence the "looking" but Portland contains many of the things we crave for a boost in quality of life; biking, microbrews, arts, culture, coffee, books, etc., etc. Now as far as a microbrew is concerned I find that it is always paired best with a little BS-ing so be careful because I might just take you up on that offer.
If you are so inclined message me and I can give you a little background on my work experience which is political in nature but would prefer not to post.
Thanks Again,
B

(14,860 posts)I try to avoid The Oregonian, being a mediocre, RW newspaper with an FR-esque online comment section.
Not being the most social creature, I don't really know any liberal/progressive groups, but that isn't really a problem since all you have to do to meet other progressives is go to a random coffee or tea place. In the three years I've lived here, I'm not sure I've ever overheard a conservative blathering on about Reagan or whatever it is they talk about. Maybe once or twice, but the incidents are so far and few between that I don't really remember. I do seem to remember posting about one event, but I think that was because it was such a novel experience.
Wish I could be more helpful! Do you or your wife have jobs lined up? What part of town are you looking at?

(600 posts)I did notice that the Oregonian was a bit lacking and that the comment section had the usual kinds of suspects. Of course newspaper comment sections is where rational debate goes to die...but at least the death is relatively quick.
As stated above the wife is trying to line something up but I am more uncommitted at this time. We are looking to be in the city proper, east of the river but price and the right place will be a major deciding factor.
