Congressional candidate's money comes from one source: himself

Last week, Chester County businessman Steve Fanelli announced that he would seek the Republican nomination to run for the 6th Congressional District seat in 2022, a seat now occupied by Democratic lawmaker U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan.

Two days later, Fanelli’s campaign issued a press release proclaiming that the neophyte political candidate had raised more than $500,000 this year and had $645,000 cash on hand to take on the two-term congresswoman.

“The support we’ve received from voters, activists, and community leaders from across the district in the just the last few days since launching our campaign has been astounding,” said Fanelli in the release issued Thursday. “My team and I are eager to take our message to voters and win this race.”

But that fundraising declaration did not necessarily provide a full picture of the candidate’s finances as he enters into his first campaign for elective office.

In fact, all of the donations that are listed in federal campaign finance documents as of June 30 came from one source: Fanelli himself.
