Galvanized by gun violence, Pa. lt. governor candidate poised to make history

Democratic state Rep. Austin Davis might be on the brink of making history as Pennsylvania’s first Black lieutenant governor, but the Allegheny County native remains tied to his blue-collar roots.

“I’m the proud son of a union bus driver and a hairdresser,” said Davis, 32, in a recent interview with PennLive.com.

With the backing of Democratic governor candidate Josh Shapiro, the state’s attorney general, Davis coasted to victory in the lieutenant governor’s race with 63 percent of the vote in a three-way race.

The lieutenant governor’s official duties including presiding over the state Senate, and chairing the Board of Pardons and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Council. And the office holder is first in the line of succession if the governor dies or resigns.
