I'd like to move back to PA

Unfortunately, with my very limited fixed income, I need a cheap room or boarding house, and they are not easy to find. So I thought I'd float the question here at DU. Pittsburgh or Philly area would be favorite, but I wouldn't rule out other, less expensive areas.

67 years old with no bad habits at all. Very quiet, keep to my room and myself. A WiFi and a laptop and I'm happy all day.

But I can't afford more than $400 a month, which makes apartments impossible. Subsidized housing works, but the waiting lists are long and the application has to be made in person, the materials can't be sent in the mail. As I currently live out of state, this is also problematic, at least until I can get back in state.

Pittsburgh is cheaper than Philly, but I am not sure $400 would cover the cost of an apartment. You would need to spend at least $600 for an apartment in and around the 'burgh.

That's why I'm looking for a room, which is typically cheaper (but even in the Pittsburgh area, more than $400). Subsidized housing is the way to go, but that involves waiting lists of a year and a half at least. I registered with every subsidized place in Allegheny County, but there turns out to be a catch: certain paperwork has to be submitted in person (mail is a no), and I am currently living in Florida. Let's say it's a bit far to commute to submit paperwork.

Perhaps someone you know might already have a house with extra space. Maybe they'd be willing to rent you a room? Usually that doesn't happen unless they already know the person. It's worth a try. I can't think of anything that might be possible for $400 per month. Good luck friend!
