Got a flat? A spare might be tougher to find if this R.I. bill is passed

PROVIDENCE -- Are automobile spare tires going the way of cassette decks or tail fins?

Car makers are moving in that direction and want Rhode Island law to move with them.

Legislation approved by the House Corporations Committee Wednesday would roll back the requirement for motor vehicles sold in Rhode Island to either have a spare tire and jack, or be equipped with run-flat tires or a "factory installed tire repair and inflation system."

The bill, introduced in the House by Rep. John Edwards, D-Tiverton, came at the urging of General Motors, which is not offering a spare tire, jack or self-inflation kit with its new all-electric Chevrolet Bolt.
