Advocacy group: Strong support in Rhode Island for mandatory earned sick time

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — More than 82 percent of Rhode Islanders show some level of support for legislation that would make earned sick time mandatory in Rhode Island, according to a poll commissioned by Rhode Island Working Families.

The poll gauged support for bills introduced in the House and Senate that would allow all workers to earn one hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked up to a maximum of 56 hours — roughly seven sick days per year.

Some 52.4 percent of respondents said they would “strongly favor” the bill, and another 29.9 percent said they would “somewhat favor” the plan.

The poll on this year’s signature proposal of the progressive Democrats was conducted by Blue Sun Campaigns from March 15 to 20 with a sample of 422 likely voters. The margin of error is 4.8 percent.
