Former Pawtucket State Sen. Doyle Charged With Bank Fraud and Tax Evasion
Former State Sen. Jamie Doyle, a Pawtucket Democrat, has been charged by the U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island with 31 counts of bank fraud and tax evasion, the federal Justice Department announced this afternoon.
Doyle, 46, son of the late Pawtucket Mayor James Doyle, resigned as a state senator in January, 2018, citing his need to get treatment for alcoholism. According to court documents, the U.S. Attorney alleges that as early as 2013, and lasting until February 2016, Doyle, as owner of Doyle Respiratory, LLC and Doyle Sleep Solutions, LLC, executed a check-kiting scheme that defrauded three banks.
The government alleges that Doyle created inflated balances in checking accounts at three banks by writing thousands of checks in order to obtain money that otherwise would not have been available to him.
The documents show that Doyle defrauded the banks between $250,000 and $550,000. It is also alleged that Doyle and his spouse failed to report to the Internal Revenue Service $326,832 in income received from the check-kiting scheme and his businesses and that he failed to file a tax return for the 2016 in which he received a gross income of $255,812.
