R.I. Assembly plans brief return to deal with gun background checks, gay parents' rights, and more
PROVIDENCE Rhode Islands legislative leaders are laying the groundwork for an unusual, but not unprecedented, one- or two-day summer session the week of July 13.
The State House is still closed to the public. But if all goes according to plan, a number of House and Senate committees will meet remotely next week to vote on bills ripe for action when the Assembly went on a months-long hiatus on March 12 or seen as a necessary step now to stanch racial unrest.
The full House and Senate would then convene a week later to move these bills along to the governor, to be signed into law, with the understanding the lawmakers will need to return at least once more to approve a budget for the year that began July 1.
The House plans to meet on Thursday, July 16, and the Senate, possibly, on Monday, July 13.
