Raimondo leaves legacy of diversity in Rhode Island courts

PROVIDENCE — There are few areas where Gov. Gina Raimondo left more of a mark than Rhode Island’s judiciary.

Over the course of her two terms, she named a diverse pool of 24 judges to the state’s benches and in doing so reshaped several courts.

For the first time ever, the state Supreme Court will be majority women after Raimondo’s recent nominations of Superior Court Judge Melissa Long and former state Sen. Erin Lynch Prata.

Long, the daughter of biracial parents who met in the Army, would make the first Black justice on the high court.
