Thousands of chickens killed in fire at Johnston poultry farm

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — The owners of a poultry farm in Johnston said a fire in a coop early Wednesday morning killed about 3,000 chickens.

A worker at Baffoni's Poultry Farm on Greenville Avenue saw flames coming from the coop at about 4:30 a.m.

The farm said the fire was contained to one side of the coop and did not spread to any other buildings.

No workers or firefighters were hurt.

The fire was ruled accidental and possibly caused by a propane heater used to keep chickens warm, according to Johnston's Battalion Chief Thomas Marcello.
