Two days before children return, shelter collapses at Murfreesboro school

Two days before children are scheduled to return to school, an outdoor pavilion at John Pittard Elementary School collapsed Wednesday during a storm.

No one was injured during the collapse, which Mufreesboro’s city engineering department reports likely occurred because an anchor bolt failed in the shelter’s concrete slab.

The pavilion, constructed in 2015, was built by the school's parent-teacher organization and was used as an outdoor learning classroom for students at John Pittard Elementary, said schools spokeswoman Lisa Trail.

Firefighters responded to the collapse around 3:30 p.m. following a storm that brought high winds, reported Kim Lawson, assistant chief of the Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department.
