Calling all educators....please help defend immigrant and refugee rights!
I received this e-mail from the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition:
"As the new school year kicks off, undocumented students are returning to school anxious and fearful about their future. By September 5th President Trump must make a decision: defend DACA in court or terminate the program. The lives of more than 8,300 youth in Tennessee hang in the balance.
For years, undocumented youth in Tennessee have been fearlessly leading the fight for immigrant rights in Tennessee. Behind the perseverance and bold advocacy of these brave youth there has always been a network of allies who have supported, encouraged, and inspired Tennessee Dreamers to keep fighting. Now, as DACA is under threat, undocumented youth need these allies to stand with them.
TIRRC is calling on all of Tennessee's educators--teachers, counselors, professors, administrators, or principals--to defend DACA and build support for the Dream Act of 2017.
How educators can stand with DACA Recipients as they go back to school
1. Come to our Ally Infosession on August 8th: If you work with DACA recipients or care about the program, we urge you to come learn how you can help join the defense. Please join us at Casa Azafran (2195 Nolensville Pike) on August 8th at 6PM.
2. Participate in our statewide Educator Day of Action on August 11th: Educators from across the state will be taking action in two simple ways: (1) calling Senators Corker and Alexander and (2) sharing a selfie on social media. Download the flyer and encourage your colleagues to take action.
3. Share resources and tools with DACA recipients: DACA youth are organizing across the state and leading the campaign. Connect any DACA recipients you know to cesar@tnimmigrant.org - share our toolkit with your students.
4. Share this email email with educators you know across Tennessee.
Thank you for standing with DACA recipients!
