Six arrested after vandalism of Confederate monument in Collierville
Collierville police arrested six people in the pre-dawn hours Friday for vandalizing a controversial Confederate monument in Town Square Park.
This is not the first time it was marred. A week ago the marker was defaced, but town crews cleaned it before many saw the vandalism.
The monument on the west side of the square has become controversial in recent months. Donated by the United Daughters of Confederacy, some have sought removal of the stone relic, while others have argued for its place in the square the historic business district.
One counter-protester was previously arrested for actions taken during one demonstration.
Both sides have appeared before Board of Mayor and Aldermen meetings to speak on behalf of their theories about the monuments place in Collierville, but the board has declined to add a discussion of the monument to its agenda.
