"Our Friend, Jean: Early Works by Jean-Michel Basquiat
Hiram Van Gordon Gallery
Thu, Nov 10 - 16
All day
FULL DESCRIPTION
More than 20 items made by art icon Jean-Michel Basquiat will be on display this week in Nashville as a traveling exhibition makes its way through various HBCUs. The works in this display include collage, drawings, painted clothing and other various ephemera — none are masterpieces, though that’s not really the point. Instead, the exhibition’s focus is on the value of collecting work, particularly when it’s from early in an artist’s career. The show is largely based on the collection of photographer Alexis Adler, a friend and early supporter of Basquiat who will be at the reception on Thursday to share stories about the works and the man himself. Reception 4-6 p.m.; through Nov. 16 at TSU’s Hiram Van Gordon Gallery, 3500 John A. Merritt Blvd."
